39: Prompt 4/5: Phantasmagoria

"There, I see it!" Aendy called out.

"On the ledge. Got it!" Indre shouted back enthusiastically and spurred Jontunskald on.

The large warhorse responded immediately, muscles tensing and throwing him forwards at a moments notice.

They whirled around...where was it? It'd been here, just a second ago. It had hovered over a boulder among the trees, looking sickly and unpleseant.

"What the..."

Where the hell were they?

This wasn't the forest? Was it? They hadn't suddenly stepped through some dimensional transference and ended up somewhere...else?

"Stay together," Aendy instructed.

"Aye."

The horses walked forwards nervously. 

A few minutes later, and, even though they'd been walking side by side, they were no longer together.

"Hey, where are you guys?" Mae cupped her hands in front of her mouth to channel the words. 

"I'm right here," Courtney responded.

"Ugh?" Mae turned her eyes upwards. She could have sworn that the voice came from above.

"What are you doing? Why aren't you falling off?"

"What d'you mean? You're the one who's upside down."

The world rumbled suddenly - throwing a convulsion that spread rapidly. The four riders had no need to urge their mounts on. They raced the shattering movement, trying desperately to stay ahead.

At that point, Indre noticed the demonic creature that they'd been chasing earlier. It didn't look like the beast they'd been dealing with before - but she was sure it wasn't friendly.

"There...after it! It might be our only way out!"

They tried...but there was no telling where anything went in this place. One moment you were walking forwards, the next you were doubling back on yourself or going sideways while never having changed in between.

"I feel sick," Courtney's head was spinning.

Another thing about this place. It seemed to be melting. Parts of it anyway - like a giant technicolour ice cream dissolving and disappearing without being reduced in the least.

While Indre and Aendy were swinging their swords as the strange twolegged creature - another one was watching them intently. This would be fun.

Now, which one of these new playmates was closest? Ah, yes...the black one. Yes...yes, that one would do nicely. He licked his lips in anticipation

Horse's Physical Health: No major issues, but some cuts and scrapes
Rider's Physical Health:  Having gotten clipped by a few branches by now, so a few cuts and bruises.  Also been knocked unconscious, so slightly blurred of vision and ringing of ears.
Horse's Mental Health:  Not happy, definitely not happy at all.
Rider's Mental Health: Currently knocked out, so they could be dancing with happy blue bunnies for all I know. 

Also, having lost the saddle, and the saddlebags attached to it, the supplies in there are now scattered to the four winds.

Ok, I went for the more surreal look for this, which I thought suited the occasion. Have to admit, when going for motion and impact rather than anatomical accuracy, it's a WHOLE lot faster to do both sketches and the actual painting. I think I'll work on a few others in the same way - should help me loosen up a bit  Think this took about 12 hours in total...
