Aside from the occasional attack by the local kaiju cousins, Daiabon was a peaceful place which attracted more than its share of tourists; who often wished for nothing more than to lounge on the many pristine beaches or, if feeling intrepid, explore some of the forests nearest to their hotel.
Most of them didn’t stray too far from their sunchairs during the day, or the nightclubs in the evening and early morning – only to repeat the whole process again (perhaps exchanging the venue of their entertainment) the next day – once the hangover had been beaten into submission.
There were however things and places that attracted them despite everything. Some of the local inhabitants put up with it because their livelihood depended on it, some because they didn’t care. Others, well, they grumbled and wished for things to return to what they’d once been (forgetting the bad and remembering the good – as memories are wont to do) and if they had to attend, they did so when there were as few alien intruders as possible.
Llyr couldn’t exactly claim to be local, but he wasn’t overly fond of the tourist himself. On the positive side, he rarely had to have anything to do with them. Few and far between were the locals that ventured into the vicinity of his “home” and of tourists there were even less sightings.
There were, however, times, when he ended up around them whether he’d wanted to or not, and right now he was trying his best to ignore the strange folks that were littering on the beach as Chali was taking him home from his shopping trip.
Hekalii had shown him a favour recently, and so Llyr thought it’d only polite to return it. Of course, she hadn’t actually asked for anything in return, but Llyr knew his goddesses. Whatever they said, they were always expecting a return. And if he could find something so suitable, from outside the island, then perhaps the trade of favours would again smile upon him.
Chali meanwhile loped easily across the beach, kicking up a shower of sand in the still air (much to the displeasure of any sunlover in their path) and eyeing the ocean longingly.
‘No,’ Llyr told the young asotu firmly. ‘Carry now, swim, later!’
She flicked an ear in his direction and continued on. Oh, how she would have loved to run in the surf, water splashing everywhere. Llyr, as much as he loved the ocean, didn’t want to have his purchases ruined, and guided the grey cow firmly away from where the sea met the sand every time she tried to sneakily veer closer, hoping he wouldn’t notice.
