The two brown bulls were squaring up, throwing dark eyes at the many others that had invaded 'their' space, humans and asotus alike.

They'd been training here for several months, with little else to worry about than the chanting of the monks and the occasional wild boar straying too close to the compound for it's fortunes to be favoured.

Today there was quite the crowd, and while the nihons might no longer be egged to fight to the death, they did all like their own personal space and they all, each and every one of them, strutted when they walked, as if they and they alone were the supreme ruler of the universe.

A whole yard full of them. Well, it was a good thing the entry-requirements were so strict. The gathering was really just one snarl away from a cozy weekend picknic turning into something more likely to see arms and limbs and fur flying.

This was about as likely to happen as it was to rain. The difference was that, unlike the rain, these scuffles had a certain element of rules to them. They also were more likely to be concerned about how well your teeth *looked* rather than what you could do with them.

Kojima and Taichi weren't bothered about that - nor were any of the other bulls. The nihon were built, bred and born for battle.

That didn't mean they weren't now spending considerable effort in puffing up their chests.

Hoshi did her best not to laugh at the sight. She knew there was *some* correlation between appearances and ability but nothing in this world, or the one beyond it, or the one beyond that, could convince her that it was *this* important. Size did matter, of course, but as all asotus were pretty much all the same size as the next, the difference was laughable small. To her, what mattered, was a warrior's spirit...and that couldn't be measured by preening or spending several hours being pampered like some oversized lapdogs. She doubted that even half of those here for their conformation tests could even hunt properly, without their human back-ups.

If Mysterious X agreed or not, it was hard to tell. Yet again he (or she) had chosen to show up dressed in some obscuring outfit. Hoshi wasn't sure where he (or she) managed to procure them all - as they always seemed to be different, but they did seem extraordinarily attached to them.

How much better *glamour* was, she thought... easier to change in-to and out-of as well...

Oh man... So sorry I flaked on this one. *Facepalms* I almost missed this being posted at all, thank you for finishing where I had failed.

The story is as lovely as ever, you have quite the knack for words. Impressed once more.
I also rather like your impressionistic paintings. The blurry lines and colours are almost soothing, and the image doesn't lose anything when I take off my glasses.
