The narrow, barely used, trail winds its way through the mountains, alternating between hugging the mountain-sides and snaking its way along the bottom of canyon floors. Here and there along the way you catch glimpses of ancient ruins, some stones here, some barely standing statues there and throw wishful glances at what remains of what must once have been a bridge crossing a particularly nasty looking gorge, too little of it is left for you to cross over it, so you have to keep going on what seems barely more than an animal path.
You rummage through your pack and manage to locate a rolled up scroll, while cursing that you couldnt drive instead, or fly in helicopters had to be good for something. But not, instead you had to go all the way on horseback there was little else that the guide at the beginning of the trail had told you when youd driven up, thinking that youd reached your destination. No, you sigh, according to the directions written on it, youre defiantly going the right way.
Much muttering later, especiially about the stable owner being very adamant about you not charting a helicopter to solve the problems. Of course, you'd do that anyway - but you can't find the bloody place on any of the maps you've consulted. So what do you do?
You keep following the instructions... Along the way the trail takes you through a natural rockformation taking the shape of a big connected arc. You ride right on through. It's beautiful...but at the time you notice nothing special about it. The landscape is the same...mountains and...what you guess...more mountains. Perhaps you look up into the sky and notice the shape of an unfamilar bird in the sky....
...except that's no bird.
In fact...what you just rode through so casually was a portal, a portal between worlds. The
Gate of Heaven Welcome...to Darklight Valley!

LEASING OF MARES
I've finally decided to allow my mares to be leased out if anyone is interested. So, just short simple rules really. The lease would be for one breeding and I get to put the breeding and foal pictures in a seperate section of my stablejournal (so I can keep track of the bloodlines).
If interested, contact me in the same way as for my stallions, devnote or comment on the mares page.

* Harlan is an easy to handle, quick to learn horse. We've already succeeded in training him to do several things on his own. He also needs to be kept stimulated, as he easily get's bored and edgy if left without new and interesting things to learn and/or investigate. Needless to say, as a foal, he'd stick his nose into anything - thankfully he's learnt some restrain since then.
He's a lovely animal and shows great promise. We probably won't be able to take him to any shows though - unless a permanent solution is found to the little problem that happens at night...
the 'little' night time problem...well...
most harlequines tend to have slight personality problems. Harlan didn't seem to have any trace of this at first, and as a foal he behaved just like any other foal - but at about 6 months he started displaying a severe personality change when it got dark - or more accurately, when night came - ordinary darkness doesn't seem to bother him, just makes him a little nervous. No amount of conditioning helped. It didn't seem right to drug him, but it was the only thing that kept him sedate during the night, rather than tearing his surroundings apart. In the long run it didn't help though, as his body became resistant to it.
So eventually we managed to train him to go up to the old stone circle when night came. Something in them keeps him from being able to leave during this period of 'influence', but the screams and sounds of rage echoes down into the valley. These days, it's outright leathal t approach him at those times, which is unless we find a solution we won't be able to show him.
It's a bit inconvenient, but he's such a wonderful horse the rest of the time...
Seeing as we eventually figured out a solution to his change of personality (we fitted him with a collar in which are enclosed smooth polished stones from the monument in question) Harlan has proven himself to be as capable a working horse as any. He's the horse of choice when needing to go out and check on the other horses in the valley, round them up or almost any other duty around the stable and grounds. Surefooted, rocks are no problem and having shown an ability to turn on a dime (well, not literally) we've started entering him into some western classes at shows - doing pretty much what he does for a job at home - and are also looking to enter him into a few races, just for the heck of it.

Bloodline Bloodtrace * (1) Magus Crurorem (eng. tr. The Blood Mage)
* 50% Kelpie, 25% Unicorn, 25% other
* Arabian type Unicorn (unusual size)
* 6ys
* 170cm
* Blood red coat with white mane and tail. White underbelly, chest and neck. White stockings on both right legs as well as a white diamondshaped star, the upper part which is hidden by his silvery horn.
* Passable traits:
His white underside is a dominant trait originating with Mako and will be passed on to his offspring. THe only exception is when another, stronger dominant trait cancels it or blends with it. THe horn may or may not pass, as he is only 25% unicorn. His temper is highly likely to be inherited.
*
This uncooperating appaition was an unexpected surprise when discovered in one of the gorges of the valley. He had to be at least a year old, if not more - and his markings so distinct and similar to that of one of the stable's bred horses that they had to have, if not the same sire, the magnificent if badtempered stallion Mako, so at least one from the same bloodline.
It had been a whole two days work just to capture him and several weeks of gathering evidence of his whereabouts and even existence before then. An existence that the stble had been alerted to by finding some of the other horses nervous and sometimes even injured with no normal explanation.
Normally the stable's owner wouldn't interfere with most of the natural comings and goings of the Valleys inhabitants - seeing as most of the horses here ran wild anyway with only a select few having been domesticated but this one had proven himself a danger to those same horses and would have to be dealt with.
As dangerous as he was stunning to look at, the stallion deserved the name he'd been given; "Magus Crurorem" the Blood Mage.
After a lot of thought - and not a small number of incidences, we decided that, while Magus isn't mad or insane, he's too much of a danger to our other horses as a stallion - so we had him gelded.
While he's still showing a behaviour that qualifies as mean (if left out with other horses in a paddock or enclosure, he will chase them, kick or bite them, especially their legs) this is a great improvement of him trying to gorge everything he encounters.
He'll try this behaviour on any and every horse he encounters - however, after witnessing such an 'event' with a highly dominant visiting stud from another stable, it seems he'll only continue if the horse in question gives way. In other words, Magus is simply a bully. In this particular case, he was lucky to escape with just a few bruises and some bite marks.
Hopefuly Sam will be able to work with him enough to actually get him to a stage where we can show him - as he's proven not to be suitable as a working horse in the Valley.
Edit We tried to have him gelded, in hope that it would calm him dowm somewhat - at least enough to be managable. For a while it seemed succesful - but somehow he's managed to revert back to being a stallion. We're not sure what it is that allows this - but it would seem that the unicorn and keplie blood in him is preventing us from 'fiddling' too much with mother nature.
Seeing as we feel it'd be cruel to go through the procedure every so often - we're just going to have to find another solution...again *sighs*

Bloodline Bloodtrace *(1)Hollow's fall
* otherwordly
* 50% Kelpie 50% Nightmare
* 7 years
* 165cm
* His coat is midnight black most of the time, but turns into shades of grey during the equinox and the mane and tail (as well as his rear hooves) are tinted red, while his front legs are decorated by two stockings reaching above the knees. Hollow's fall's most prominent feature are the four horns on his head of different sizes, splashed with blood-red markings from the tip downwards. He also has a scar on his right hind quarter. When in the dark, his eyes glow with a white blue light allowing him to see even in the depth of blackness.
Unlike his dam he has no power over water, but he is attracted to it. If he's inherited any abilities from his sire, only time will tell.
* passable traits: Will most likely pass on the ability to see in the dark - along with the glowing eyes, though the colour will vary. Red tints will be seen somewhere on his offspring - the amount varying with the mare's colouring. The amount of horns will also vary depending on the dam. If bred to a mare with bad temper or dark blood (such as other nightmares or the like) the dormant nightmare blood will surface - perhaps even resulting in the offspring having a taste for live flesh.
Hollow doesn't take to tack well, so he's rarely ridden, and if so, usually bareback with only a halter or a lead. He's proven to be quite the little rascal, when he feels comfortable.
The other day, we realized at least one of the reasons for this. For the first time we were able to examine Hollow's mouth. This came about due to that' we've realized that he wasn't eating anything and we were concerned.
It would appear that, while Hollow in fact has the kind of teeth you'd expect from a nightmare and can, in fact, open his mouth quite widely, the reason for why he isn't eating seems to have been inherited from his Kelpie side. If Kelpies actually eat, we don't know - but Hollow has never shown any interest in food (unless it's treats) possibly one reason for why he's so much more laid back than most horses with a large abount of nightmare blood.
It was good that we didn't need to worry about his health but we
are going to have to work out what to use on a bridle, as he obviously can't handle a bit like an ordinary horse.
With all the effor going into his training for the races, we've discovered something else. While Hollow is perfectly (for a nightmare anyway) behaved while you're on the ground and takes commands very well that way - once you're
secure on his back, he seems to think that as you go where he goes, he can go where he wants to go - so getting him to behave is a lot more troublesome. If you have x numbers of pounds of carnivore that wants to go in one direction while you want to go in the other, there's not really all that much of a competition.
Thankfully this isn't as much a problem in the valley - as Mae usually doesn't use a saddle or bridle on him, so I think we'll be keeping him as a halter and trick horse when it comes to show once this first (and only) race is over - unless it goes unexpectantly well.

* Creamy white coat with ice blue mane and tail. The tips of his wings are also coloured ice blue.
* The blue frost/ice colouring will appear in some form on his offspring. All of them will inherit a greater tolerance for cold, but it will depend on the nature of the mare if this will be to the same extent as Snowfells own.
A mountain Pegasus, Snowfell is a solitary soul. Hes strong and will fight for what he considers his, but this fellow wont seek out battle for no reason. His extreme tolerance for cold and the ability to live off minimal resources makes him the ultimate survivor in cold climates. This trait is so strong, that along with his frost/ice colouring of mane and tail as well as the markings on his wings, lends itself to the theory that hes indeed a throwback to an ancient breeding between a Pegasus and a creature of the Ice Realm. His coat is soft, as velvet.
Snowfell is the strongest flier in the Valley and its surroundings and can fly tirelessly for leagues further than any of the other Pegasi here though he is by no means the swiftest in the air.

* Dawn-coloured coat. He might look like a palomino at first glance, but in fact his coat is made up by white and yellow hairs on a light base in slightly varying shades. The long mane and tail are white with just the odd golden strand thrown in. Hooves are matching the colouring of his coat.
* The most likely traits this fellow will pass on is his playful nature and incredible agility whether his offspring inherits his wings or not -in the air.
Sundancer is generally gentle and carefree. He can often be found soaring around the peaks and cliffs, as well as trying his chances with some of the narrow stretches and broken cliffs and passages in the valley. Very acrobatic and agile, this is a friendly fellow whod rather play than do anything else. When it comes to games, there is no end to his creativity and most creatures of the valley have learnt that he means to harm even though some of his antics can send them ducking for cover (like when dive bombing the herds of deer and flocks of birds).

* Midnight black coat with 4 identically long white socks. The length of his mane and tail will vary with his mood, as will the breed whichs form hes taking at the moment.
* Most successful breedings will be to mares with at least some spiritual form or otherworldly blood in them. The physical characteristics will vary depending on which breed hell be at the time, but theres a high chance that the offspring will display 4 white legs though the length of the socks can vary greatly. Also, theyre likely to inherit his courage (or more accurately lack of fear). This can be a bad or a good thing depending on the moderating nature of the mare as the lack of fear in the offspring can lead to them taking risks they (unlike their sire) can not survive.
Spirited, hes not the type to back away from a fight. While not bad tempered, this free spirit will not be forced to do anything against his will and this means confrontations can be furious, bloody and merciless. He possesses an astonishing speed for a horse, is agile and an amazing jumper when he believes no one sees he can be seen leaping from rock to rock more like a cliff hopper than a horse.

* Ability to see in the dark
* This nightmare/kelpie/demon cross is pretty much what you'd expect from a horse with such blood - a handful and then some. She's lithe as a panther and delights in stalking the birds up on the hills, hiding in the bushes (she's a bit big to hide in the grass) and is quick enough to catch them more times than not.
A carnivore, she feeds herself - mostly on small animals such as rabbits, but as she grows we've no doubt that she'll start looking for bigger prey. Hopefully we'll have trained her enough so that she'll leave the other horses alone - even so, most of our equine population can defend themselves.
The biggest danger when working with her is her fangs, as she tends to bite when annoyed. A habit we haven't quite manage to break her off. Thankfully (considering her bloodline) she isn't insane - just a predator.
If you visit the valley, she'll trail you - staying just out of sight, allowing you to catch glimpses of you. If you're wounded, it's best to hope you don't run into her - as she'll will attack if she senses that you're too weak and the smell of fresh blood can drive her a bit wild.

* Embers' dam died during foaling and it was only thanks to a lot of effort from Sam that her own life was saved. As it was, she's been had reared from birth and has come to consider herself a person much the same as those who reared her. It took a great deal of time and patience to teach her what her wings were for (seeing as humans don't, generally, fly) but she's proving to be an agile, swift flyer with a remarkable talent for precision and the eyes of a hawk.
She's the only one of the valley's pegasi that's hand-tame, though she doesn't much like strangers if they smell funny (such as visitors from city stables or industrialised areas)
Embers quite happily follows Sam around, much like an adoring puppy (with pretty much the same expression on her face

)
We don't yet know what, if anything, to train her in. But with a skill in the air that rivals Sundancer's, if there ever is a flight show - we'll make sure to be there with her. As it is - we'll just let her finish growing up.

Unlike her dam, she's proven that, while quite a handful, it's possible to handle her as long as you pay attention to where she has her horn, as she can often throw her head about without realising that her horn is, in fact, a part of her (we had to come unstick her from where she'd gotten, well, stuck to the ceiling of her stall, as a very young horse.
With her unusual colouring and bearing, it would seem only natural to see if she'll have a future in the showring - and with her gaites, it's quite possible that we've finally gotten a proper dressage horse at the stable at last.

She's very willing, but also quite spirited - though this mostly takes the form of that she consideres nearly everything to be a game of some sort. Not the least bit skittish - she loves pretending she is if she thinks her rider or handler is too inexperienced to realize that she's just pretending.
While not as fast as her sire, she's proving to have inherited much of her dam's endurance - and with that combination we're currently training her in cross country and eventing.

* Age unknown but well past 100
* Colour is usually a milky white with eyes as black as the deep waters where no sun reaches
* Offspring will display white colouring somewhere on their bodies. If bred to a stallion with otherworldly blood, its quite likely that some of her powers over water will be passed on to the offspring if nothing else, her affection for water in any form will pass on regardless of the stallions characteristics. While her shifting mood swings might not be inherited, the offspring will most likely pass into either one extreme or the other either peaceful or fierce.
Named after a Celtic water goddess, this water-spirit shifts between benign and vengeful with the waxing and waning of the moon. The fuller the moon, the more benign she will be, leaving her watery home and walking the lands, gentle and loving. At the opposite end of the cycle she usually retreats to the water full time. During that time she is quick to anger and invading her territory or harming the waters in any way will incur her wrath. If angered enough at the spring or autumn equinox - at the height of her power - she might even stalk the lands, ravaging them where she goes.
Her powers as a water-spirit makes her one of the most powerful creatures in Darklight Valley, with an inane ability to control water. And like the element of her being, she's as able to heal as she is to render asunder.

A white sock adorns her right back leg and cream coloured hooves touches the ground on all four feet. Mane and tail are long and creamy white with flecks of yellow/gold. A curved silvery coloured horn upon her forehead.
* Shell pass the white (or light) underside down to all her offspring as this is a dominant trait inherited from her sire. Its possible theyll inherit the horn, but its not guaranteed. The colour of the horn might change slightly, but unless the stallion has a truly different style horn, the slight curve shape will prevail. A slight touch of temper will most likely be passed on as well.
* A lovely little filly, named for the garden plant and with a name to match her parents (Mirage and Mako), beginning with M. She loves to play in the shallow water pools near the waterfalls. Not as easygoing as her mother and despite her unicorn horn she has no magic. Take care though, as it's still sharp and with a bit of a temper she's not someone you want to get on the wrong side of. Blue main and tail and the golden horn of a unicorn upon her forehead. Still traces of the eohippus tail. Prehistoric hooves. Slightly short legs in comparison to the body.
* The white underside is a dominant trait (passed down from Mako). The stripes may or may not pass down depending on the mare, the same goes for the tail. Because she only has partial unicorn blood, the horn will not be inherited unless bred to a unicorn stallion or to a stallion with strong magical blood. It will always be gently curved, though the lenght, slenderness and colour may vary. Dependig on the stallion, she may or may not pass down her powers over water.

Mannanan * Rainmaker is a rather sociable horse, but her affinity for water makes it tricky to train her. She might look intimidating to other horses and animals, as if she had an almost permanent scowl and her ears often laid back - however this is more because she's not very trusting and will rather chase off anyone she doesn't think is worthy of her company, preferring to keep the company of those she deems more powerful than herself or just interesting.
While her legs are somewhat short in comparison to her body, she's got elegant movements and could well produce some fine dressage horses if bred to a long legged stallion.
