Biography

I've been drawing horses for as long as I can remember, but for most of my early life that was the only thing I could draw. Somewhere around 1991 I started tracing every picture of horses, people and birds of prey I could find. This helped develop a sense for the hand to know where the lines were supposed to go.

For the central motif of a pic - like a horse for example - I still prefer to start out with a reference, just to get the anatomy and angles right...

For several years, I worked soley with plastic paints on architechtual film, usually tracing the main motif and adding the remainder of the picture myself.

Somewhere around 1995 I began using these colours on canvas and soon made the move into oil paints. Had it been necessary to purchase the whole oil-paint kit from scratch it's doubtful I would ever have started, but I was lucky enough to be given the kit my grandmother had been using when younger, everything from the easle, the paints, the brushes, some unpainted loose canvas and the ususal mediums. I also recieved a number of paints from a neighbour who was moving away.

Thanks to these two gifts my exploration of the world of oil-painting began.

For some time, the usual oil-paint brushes were the only ones I used but they didn't create the effect I was trying to achieve and I moved back to the soft brushes I had previously used for the 'film'. It also took until about a year ago before I began making use of the different mediums available - though I'm reluctant to use anything but the raw linseed oil to dilute the paints.

Today I use the soft brushes almost exclusively and work most with sizes

from 00 and up to 1, while also making good use of sponges, cloths and occasionally fingers.

For several years I was lucky enough to be part of a group under the tuition of a known artist. This I lost when moving to Australia in 2001.

It has been a very rocky art road leading up until today, with sheer persistence making up for the lack of raw talent.

Of course, real life do tend to intrude and with currently being in the final stages of an MA in archaeology and the dissertation that requires it does not leave me with as much time for my painting as I'd like. Since I'm applying to continue with a PhD, this situation is not likely to change - and the major reason why I don't take comissions.
